The algorithms understand the search query and retrieve relevant documents from the index. Then, they rank the results in the order of perceived relevance and importance. There are several factors that influence the applicability and usefulness of these results.

In short, search engines work like answering machines. If you search for something on the net, you need to type your query in the search bar. The search engines hunt their billions of documents and recover search results according to their significance.
